Prediction market platform, Kalshi, allows users to trade on a near-boundless range of markets, including sports, politics, corporate decisions and cultural events. Such market diversity has allowed the brand to attract more than $100B in lifetime notional trading, as reported by the company earlier this year.
But what are Kalshi users really trading on?
In this Kalshi deep dive, we uncover trending prediction markets at Kalshi in September 2026.
Tesla Roadster launch uncertainty creates Kalshi momentum
Elon Musk's Tesla announced the Tesla Roadster in 2017, promising significant performance upgrades over existing models and industry peers. However, nearly nine years on from its inaugural showcase, the Roadster remains unavailable to the general public.
Its prospective release captured an audience at Kalshi throughout September. At the start of the month, the prediction market operator confirmed that its markets attributed a 10% chance that the Roadster would launch in 2026.
Just two weeks later, on September 14, Tesla announced an October 1 Roadster event dedicated to the brand-new car model, with rumors of sub-one-second zero-to-60mph capabilities swirling.
That announcement did little to convince traders of a 2026 release. Now, markets predict a 5.8% chance that the Roadster launches before the New Year.
In total, over $83,000 in trading volume has been recorded by Kalshi's "Tesla Roadster delivered this year?" market.
Tesla-SpaceX merger speculation makes waves
September saw the Tesla Robotaxi app overtake Uber to become the nation's number-one travel platform.
News of this sudden performance uptick for Tesla Robotaxi came in the wake of Uber's decision to issue caution on automated taxi services. By contrast, the Elon Musk-owned group relies on non-human productivity.
Confidence in a merger between Tesla and SpaceX - Musk's aerospace and transport company - spiked as a consequence of Robotaxi's success, with Kalshi stating that there is a 75% chance of consolidation between both outfits before 2028 immediately after the app took top spot. Markets remain somewhat bullish on unification before 2027, which carries a probability of 20%.
This market has attracted $1.3M in volume since March 2026.
AI concerns generate Kalshi market movement
On September 10, OpenAI unveiled Daybreak, a billion-dollar initiative to help critical infrastructure operators - including power utilities - defend against future autonomous AI attacks, after a July incident (dubbed the 'Hugging Face Incident') in which AI agents escaped their testing environment and carried out unauthorized attacks on Hugging Face's and OpenAI's own systems
OpenAI, which owns ChatGPT, produced a comprehensive report on 'Hugging Face' at the end of August, resulting in a steep uptick in trading activity tied to timelines for when OpenAI will achieve Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
At the time of writing, Kalshi markets state there is a 17% probability that OpenAI will develop AGI before 2027. For 2028, that figure rises to 48.1%, with a 63.4% chance of AGI by 2030.
OpenAI is also at the heart of several alternative markets at Kalshi, including:
- Will OpenAI increase the cost of ChatGPT?: Markets say there is a 14% chance that prices either decrease or stay the same.
- Sam Altman replaced as OpenAI CEO?: With an 8% implied probability for his exit, Altman is not expected to be replaced; probabilities for his potential exit plummeted in September 2026.
- When will OpenAI officially announce an IPO?: There is a 70% chance that OpenAI announces an IPO before April 1, 2027, according to Kalshi.
Users are backing OpenAI to oversee the 'top-ranked AI model' by the year's end, with traders cumulatively declaring a 29% chance of the Altman-run company providing the highest-rated AI product on December 31.
Trump provokes major volume across social media & government questions
Markets associated with President Donald Trump consistently drive volume at Kalshi. September 2026 has been no exception, with traders able to predict the total number of Truth Social posts published by the 47th US President, approval ratings, potential visits to personal golf club resorts and more.
Prominent trading activity came in mid-September, when Kalshi asked: "When will Trump rename something else?" after the 80-year-old suggested renaming New Mexico to New America.
As of the week commencing September 21, 2026, Kalshi says there is a 58% probability that Trump will suggest an alternative name for an unspecified region, product, action, or "something else" before November 1.
There is diminishing confidence from Kalshi traders toward Trump administration officials, too. At 35%, Pete Hegseth is predicted to be ousted from Trump's government next, while markets also suggest that there is a 40% likelihood that Trump will publicly criticize Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh by January.
The latter experienced a noteworthy swing in mid-September, when the Federal Reserve increased interest rates, directly opposing Trump's wishes. Now, Kalshi users' trading activity says there is a 15% chance that Trump lashes out at Warsh by November.
Eye-watering fuel prices not as bad as expected, say Kalshi traders
On September 15, Kalshi reported that executives in the oil industry had become increasingly concerned with fuel availability, telling its followers that remaining gasoline supplies were "almost exhausted."
Just two days later, on September 17, the prediction market platform noted fuel shortages in California, Florida and Texas. Kalshi users can trade on the price of gasoline in all three states, with over $750,000 in overall volume across each fuel-focused option.
The prediction platform also supports nationwide fuel and diesel price derivatives. Forecasts have actually dropped from $4.70 per gallon to $4.40 per gallon, with a 71% chance that prices meet the latter.
On an end-of-year basis, Kalshi puts the probability of fuel prices hitting $4.60 by January 1, 2027 at 66%. By contrast, in May, traders expected fuel to hit $5.50 by the New Year.
Kalshi markets provide vital insights for public perception
Kalshi's official X page consistently posts about a broad range of markets that have gained traction, have suddenly changed price, or are priced staggeringly evenly.
For example, in September the operator published tweets regarding markets for the next James Bond actor - which were neck and neck between Callum Turner (47%) and Jack Lowden (46%) - as well as possible cameos for Tobey Maguire and Hugh Jackman in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie.
Away from entertainment, Senate, House and Presidential election probabilities were also on the docket.
Users can expect the platform to continue creating and posting about innovative trading options throughout major cultural events, with market activity potentially indicating general public sentiment.
