The American Gaming Association (AGA) detailed the uplift in spending in its Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker, with the $27.1bn total derived from the regulated online casino (iGaming) and sports betting sector.

All of the data was sourced from the relevant state regulatory bodies. Information supplied by the AGA also revealed that:

  • Total gross gaming revenue (GGR) reached a record $78.72bn, up 9.2% from 2024.
  • This was a driver for record gaming tax revenue of $18.09bn, up 15.1% on the previous year.

How much did American gamblers wager in 2025?

The headline $27.1bn figure is the gross gaming revenue (GGR) return for operators, which is the amount 'won' from bettors after payouts.

The actual amount wagered by Americans on online sportsbooks in 2025 is $166.94bn, but no similar figure is available for iGaming.

While the terms can be confused, 'spend' is often used in headlines to reflect the amounts lost to regulated gambling firms in the States. It is a vast spend, which reflects the contemporary market.

Bill Miller, President and CEO of the AGA, reflected on the latest findings of the tracker report:

"For another year, legal commercial gaming in the United States has delivered exceptional results for consumers, operators, and the communities we serve.

"These record revenues and tax contributions demonstrate the broad appeal of regulated gaming markets and why strong state oversight remains essential as our industry evolves", he added.

Total revenue for online sports betting and online casino

When further examined, the various sources provide a breakdown of the record gambling spend by US bettors and the split between online casino and sports book activity.

Sports betting revenue was recorded as $16.96bn (up 22.8%), with the vast majority (around 96.5%) coming from online or mobile channels. The total handle (amount wagered) was $166.94bn, up 11%.

Revenues from iGaming produced a lower amount - due to the small amount of states that permit it, in comparison - but still a massive $10.74bn, giving an increase of 27.6%.

The ASA indicated this is the fastest-growing segment, surpassing $1bn in monthly revenue for the first time in December 2025.

When combined, the total revenue for online sports betting and online casino reached $27.1bn, to deliver the record intake for regulated online betting in the US.

Which states are the main drivers for US online gambling revenues?

In the US, seven States currently permit online casinos - with Maine en route to legalization later on in 2026 - and 32 States regulating online sports betting.

The 38 gaming markets across the nation collected more than $6bn in taxes on online gambling revenue in 2025.

The 'big three' iGaming powerhouses (among just seven states that have a regulated online casino market) are Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New Jersey, while in online sports betting, the top performing US markets by revenue are in New York, Illinois and New Jersey.

While the record revenues and market growth were lauded, concern was raised about the continued threat from the black market, with those platforms still funneling billions away from the regulated market and the subsequent loss of tax dollars.
