Americans expected to wager $30bn on the new NFL season
The American Gaming Association (AGA) has estimated that Americans will wager $30bn on the 2025 NFL season, which would represent an 8.7% increase on last year’s estimated total of $27.6bn.
The figure, which is the total staked with regulated sportsbooks, reflects the growth in the US sports betting market which shows no signs of slowing down.
AGA President and CEO Bill Miller stated: “This season, fans have more ways than ever to responsibly engage with the game they love. Legal sports betting enhances the fun and friendly competition that make NFL games and traditions even more special.
“With strong consumer protections and a shared commitment to responsibility, the legal, regulated sports betting industry encourages all football fans to have a game plan before placing a bet and ensure their gameday experience – regardless of the outcome of a bet or the game – remains enjoyable.”
Since the Supreme Courts’ ruling in 2018, to overturn the ban, legal sports betting is currently legal in 40 US jurisdictions – including 39 states and Washington D.C.
What’s particularly striking about the estimated increase in revenue is that no new states have legalized sports betting in the past 12 months.
Therefore, the huge increase in revenue is solely due to more Americans choosing to increase their levels of engagement with betting on the NFL season.
Whether that be an increase in the amount wagered on bets, or the number of bets placed during the season, sports betting enthusiasts are likely to engage with the NFL like never before.
Furthermore, legal betting companies are constantly developing new markets and products for their players to enjoy, something which might also be why there’s the estimated increase in revenue this year.
As a result of the prediction, the AGA wants to remind people of the importance of having a game plan and to bet responsibly during the 2025 NFL season.
Their campaign includes five key principles, which are:
- Set a budget and stick to it: Determine how much you are willing to spend and never chase losses.
- Keep it social: Betting should be a form of entertainment shared with friends and family.
- Know the odds: Understand the games and your chances of winning.
- Play legally: Use regulated, legal betting platforms.
- Keep your cool: Athlete harassment is never acceptable and good sportsmanship is for everyone.
It’s important to stress though that support for legal betting is strong, with 75% of Americans supporting the idea of legal sports betting in their home state whilst 90% of people view sports betting as an acceptable form of entertainment.
The 2025/26 NFL season kicks off on September 4 with the Dallas Cowboys visiting the defending Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles. The 106th season will conclude at the Levi’s Stadium in California on February 8 with Super Bowl LX.
