⭐ Tennessee Online Sports Betting

On April 30, 2019, online sports betting became legal in Tennessee, as Gov. Bill Lee chose to let the Tennessee sports betting bill, championed by Rep. Rick Staples (D, Knoxville), pass the governor’s desk without his signature. On paper, it seemed to be one of the most progressive betting laws. At the time, Tennesseans praised the Volunteer State law for the online-only model for the Tennessee market.

In short, Tennessee was the first state that didn’t require mobile betting operators to partner with retail casinos or retail sportsbooks. Since then, Wyoming has joined the mobile-only crowd with no physical sportsbook locations.

Tennessee Sportsbooks include BetMGM, Fanduel, Draftkings, and Caesars

Tennessee launched legalized sports betting platforms on Nov 1, 2020. Now there’s many legal online sportsbooks to choose from.

Rules & Regulations

Permitting online-only sports betting did not come without controversy, but the market has been attracting operators since the betting bill was introduced. Licensees must pay a licensing fee of $750,000, then another $750,000 annually. In addition, the gross gaming revenue tax rate is 20%, which is on the higher side of the industry. Operators must also buy official league data to settle the bets, and live betting & prop bets based on an individual’s performance are not allowed on college sports. Local bettors must be 21 years old to register at a sportsbook.

10% Hold Requirement

The mandatory hold requirement caused the biggest uproar among the operators, as they are required to keep 10% of the money wagered and offer worse odds. In other words, in order for a bettor to win $100, they must wager more than they would in other states or on an offshore sportsbook.

Tennessee regulators argued that the hold ensures taxable revenue and prevents bigger books from undercutting the smaller ones. While top sportsbooks have tried to fight against the 10% hold, the rule will continue in the upcoming year as well. The tax revenue is spent on education, infrastructure and other necessary projects.

⭐ Tennessee Sports Betting Sites 2023

The previous governing body Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation finally launched legal sports betting on November 1st 2020. Four TN sports betting operators launched sportsbooks the opening weekend. Given the size and market potential of legal online sports betting, it attracted the biggest players in the online sports betting industry, and more are on their way. The approved sportsbooks have Tennessee sports betting bonuses up to $1,100 for new players.

⭐ Sports in Tennessee

So what can you bet on in Tennessee? Professional sports and college sports betting in Tennessee is possible, and there are plenty of teams to bet on. Since most Tennesseans like to bet on teams they know and love, TN sports teams, college games, and sporting events are some of the most popular betting options on gambling sites. Tennessee is home to several major U.S. sporting teams, and many major sportsbooks are partnering with the teams from different sports.

Tennessee Sports

Some of the main teams in sports in Tennessee: Tennessee Titans, Memphis Grizzlies and Nashville Predators.

NFL Betting

AFC South participants Tennessee Titans (former Houston Oilers) weren’t regulars in the NFL playoffs during the 2010s, but did advance to the AFC Championship game in 2019. This year, their odds of winning the Super Bowl are slim at best. However, a loyal fan base follows home games at the Nissan Stadium on Titans Way during the NFL season. For the sports bettors, player props might be the way to go when wagering on the Tennessee Titans football team. Titans were the first sports team to partner with BetMGM Sportsbook.

NHL Betting

Ice Hockey in Tennessee is a big deal. The Bridgestone Arena residents Nashville Predators were the Presidents Trophy champions of the 2017-2018 season, but fell short in the playoffs. While they are not the Central Division favorites to advance to the Stanley Cup finals, they offer many interesting NHL betting options for futures and prop bets.

MLS Betting

The Nashville SC (Soccer Club) entered the MLS in 2020 as a new sports team, and they haven’t looked half bad during the regular season. Nashville SC games are known for being low-scoring affairs, providing perfect opportunities for betting under for the most part.

MLB Betting

There has been a significant push to get an MLB expansion team to Nashville in the near future. However, the plan is still developing, and it might be some time before Tennessee bettors can enjoy pro sports league level baseball betting in the state. For now, you might look to other teams like the St. Louis Cardinals or the Atlanta Braves, both of which have had great success recently.

NBA Betting

The NBA team Memphis Grizzlies, led by former Rookie of the Year Ja Morant, haven’t made the NBA playoffs from the Western Conference in five years. They are also not considered to seriously compete for the NBA Title for season 2021-22 either. So things are not looking too bright for basketball fans in Tennessee as they visit the FedEx Forum, but maybe new minority owner Justin Timberlake can bring something new to the table.

College Betting

Tennessee state sports wagering rules allow you to bet on college sports in Tennessee; props are mostly prohibited. You can place bets on college sports, and wager on the Power Five Southeastern Conference members Vanderbilt Commodores or University of Tennessee Volunteers college football teams, playing home games at Vanderbilt Stadium and Neyland Stadium with a couple bowl appearances in recent years. You might also be able to bet on another NCAA Division I college football program, East Tennessee State University.

The University of Tennessee Volunteers Basketball is also highly successful compared to the teams in professional sports leagues in the state. While they have not yet made it to the Final Four and won the March Madness title, they have made appearances in Sweet Sixteen. The women’s college basketball program is also one of the best in the US.

College basketball betting offers plenty to bettors, as the Memphis Tigers are another top team in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, and have even played in the National Championship game. Other local college teams with basketball programs include the Austin Peay State University and Lipscomb University.

Other Markets

As Tennessee sports teams are not very successful, aside from the collegiate sports, casual Tennessee sports bettors might want to check out other sports betting markets. Betting online on the following major sports leagues in international sports and events is available in Tennessee.

  • UFC Betting
  • UEFA Champion’s League
  • English Premier League
  • Tennis US Open
  • Tour De France
  • PGA Tour Golf
  • The Olympics

Horse Racing

In addition to sportsbooks like DraftKings that offer fixed odds on horse races, users can bet on horses legally using designated horse betting apps like AmWager Racebook or TVG. These sites offer horse betting pools, instead of fixed odds betting.

⭐ Available Types of Bets

Sports betting operators offer the following bet types individual players can choose to bet on sports with. You can shop around to find the best betting lines for any wager type.

  • Moneylines: The most common type of bet, where you bet on the winner. For example, you can put on your bet slip the Nashville Predators to win over the Colorado Avalanche. Simple.
  • Point Spread Bets: Sports games are often not evenly matched, and Tennessee’s online sportsbooks try to offer interesting point spreads for bettors. For example, if the Tennessee Titans are playing, the betting site might offer a Titans -7,5 bet. If they win by 8 or more, the point spread bet wins.
  • Prop Bets: The online sportsbook might offer a bet that Tom Brady scores two touchdowns. This is called a proposition bet or a prop bet. Prop bets are available for most sports. You can place props pre-game or in-game.
  • Totals Bet: You can also bet on the total points scored in a game. For example if the Tennessee Volunteers Basketball are playing Kentucky Wildcats, you can bet on whether the combined final score is over or under 150,5.
  • Futures Bet: In futures bets, you bet on a future event. For example, you could bet on the championship game winner or who’ll win the World Series. Futures payouts are huge, compared to totals bets and live bets, but your favorite teams winning it all might be unlikely.
  • Parlays: A Parlay is a combination of multiple bets. For example, if all the Tennessee pro sports teams play on the same day, you can wager that they all win for bigger payouts. Most mobile sportsbooks also offer Same Game Parlays, so you can just bet on one single game, as well as parlay insurance, which allows one of the legs to be wrong.
  • Live Betting: Live betting, or in-game betting is done during the event, and most folks love it. Sometimes you can even place specific in-play wagers like the next foul committed in the Memphis Grizzlies game, and more bets open up as the game progresses.

Are There Bets That Are Not Legal in TN?

Yes, but the only restriction relates to college games. Live betting on collegiate sporting events and collegiate prop bets are not legal in Tennessee sports wagering, but you can place a sports bet on pretty much everything else in the Volunteer State. So a moneyline bet on the Tennessee college football team is okay, but in-game wagering is off-limits.
