Ohio Sports Betting Timeline
Ohio sports betting launch has a clear roadmap that lead to the universal launch date of January 1st, 2023.
- August 17, 2022: The universal-start-date windows have closed for business entities in Ohio. Now the Commission is asking license applicants to shift their focus towards ensuring the necessary persons obtain standard sports gaming employee licenses by November 2, 2022. In the state of Ohio, employees of casino and sports betting sites also need a license to operate and work with gambling business.
- Sports betting employees who submit their application before November 2 are guaranteed consideration ahead of the universal start date of January 1st. Those betting operators who miss this date may still apply for it but there is no guarantee that it will be done by the launch date.
- As of late July 2022, there are about 1100 type C sports betting kiosks’ enthusiasts who want to host sports beting in their businesses. That number is about 11% of the 9,800 licensed locations enumerated by the Ohio Lottery. There can be two kiosks in each business site. Type C sports gaming licenes only allow for a limited betting options which includes Spreads or spread bets, Moneylines, Parlays (two to four legs), and Totals.
- In late August 2022, Type-C sports gaming hosts can still applying for licenses. Although the host window closed with the second mobile management services provider window, the requirements to be licensed as a Type-C sports gaming host in the state are far less than the other business entities involved in sports gaming. Popular Grocery and retail stores have applied for betting kiosks.
- On June 1st, The launch date for Ohio sports betting was announced as January 1st, 2023. More than 3,000 applications for retail and online sports betting licenses are expected.
- The OH Casino Control Commission accepted wagering license applications beginning June 15 through July 15. There is a second window for applicants in July-August.
- BetMGM Sportsbook, PointsBet Sportsbook, DraftKings (Crown Ohio Gaming), JACK Cleveland Casino (BetJACK), and Penn Sports Interactive (Barstool) applied for Mobile Management Services Provider in late June 2022.
- JACK Cleveland Casino has also applied as a Type A sports gaming proprietor and Type B proprietor. There is no update on its two skins for the mobile management service provider.
- Sportsbook operators are already teaming up with sports teams. For example, the Cleveland Browns signed a deal with Bally Bet Ohio to be an official sports betting partner of the pro football team. Fubo Gaming is partnering with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
- Launched legal sports betting on 1st of January 2023
Rules and Regulations
- Number of Licenses: Ohio will have up to 25 licenses, which can be issued to Ohio professional sports teams, leagues, casinos and racinos (horse racing opeators). Each is guaranteed one skin (one Ohio sports betting app), but can apply for another if they can prove it will benefit the state financially. There is a total possibility of 40+ sportsbooks in Ohio. However, it is common that all skins are not utilized when a state launches mobile gambling operations. So the number of Ohio sports betting apps may grow in future.
- Tax Rate: 10% tax rate will be applied to all betting, and operators are not allowed to have negative revenue for tax purposes.
- Betting Limitations: Esports betting will be allowed, but fixed odds horse betting will not. Betting on in-state Ohio college teams is alright as well. Not all states allow bets on collegiate sports.

Free Bets, Risk-Free Bets & Deposit Matches in Ohio Online Sports betting
The sports betting market in Ohio is extremely competitive, and is estimated to reach $1 billion in revenue annually. Sports betting companies try to attract new Ohio sports bettors by offering bonuses or promotions, and we expect that most operators will have great offers for Ohio residents.
Ohio sportsbooks can technically sign up new customers before January 1st as per the rules. However, they will start taking bets only on the universal launch date.
- Free bets – A small site credit offer; bettors can usually only cash out the winnings. The curious thing here is that the OCCC forbid operators to market free bets or risk-free bets, as these will always require a deposit or at least a minimum wagering requirement in order to be able to withdraw your winnings.
- Risk-free bets – The sports betting site will refund you in free bets if your first bet loses. Technically this is not a 100% risk free bet, as you still need to play the free bet before withdrawing.
- Deposit matches – The sportsbook will match your deposit up to a certain cap (for example, DraftKings offers a 20% up to $1,000).
Ohio Sportsbooks will also offer promotions to existing players. These might include odds boosts, parlay insurances, promotions for teams like Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cincinnati Bengals, or sports season wagering promotions such as for the Super Bowl or March Madness.
Soon sports crazy Ohioans can place sports wagers on the Super Bowl and World Series, and even on college sports teams like Buckeyes at March Madness.
Ohio Sports Betting Promo Codes
Now that sports bettors can finally bet online, the sportsbooks will make Ohio betting promo codes available for residents. When there is a sportsbook promo code in Ohio, we at Bonusfinder US will bring them to you.
Wagering Requirements
Sports betting websites often attach wagering requirements, which are also called playthrough requirements, to their bonuses. This means that you need to wager through your bonus a set number of times before you can withdraw your money.
β OH Sports Betting Markets
The Buckeye State is home to more than 11 million people, so the sports wagering market potential is huge. You can also place wagers on college sports.
- NFL Betting
- NBA Betting
- MLB Betting
- NHL Betting
- MLS Betting
- UFC/MMA Betting
- PGA Tour Betting
- College Sports Betting
NFL Betting
Football is the king of sports in of sports in America and Ohio is no exception. With the Browns and the Bengals, NFL Betting will be huge in the state. Finally, it’s no longer just the DFS players who get to sweat their bets every NFL Sunday. With the Bengals’ recent trip to the Super Bowl, Super Bowl betting will without a doubt still be the day when the state records its largest sports betting handle.
Cleveland Browns
The Browns haven’t been great these last few years. As one of just two teams ever to go 0-16 in a season, they are not too likely to make it to the NFL playoffs. However, they did pull of an upset in 2020 when they qualified for the Playoffs, so they do have an outsider chance. However, the Browns playoff odds are looking bad at the moment.
Cincinnati Bengals
With Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, the Bengals are quickly becoming one of the most followed teams in professional football. Burrow, who is a local boy, is looking to take the Bengals to the Super Bowl and their odds to win it all should be a popular betting option in Ohio. Futhermore, the sportsbooks are certain to offer boosted odds on the Bengals’ games. Right now the Bengals are primed for the playoffs.
NBA Betting
NBA betting is as much about the individual players as it is about the teams and totals. Prop bets are the favored bet type for most sharp NBA bettors and the Cleveland Cavaliers are no exception too. Even though LeBron James is long gone, there are still a lot of proposition bets you can play on their games.
Cleveland Cavaliers
After the 2016 NBA Championship, the Cavaliers have had to rebuild their team. It’s still a work in progress and real success might still be a couple of years off. Nevertheless the team has a lot of potential and could pull of suprises in the next few years.
MLB Betting
Baseball is a slow game to watch, but it’s an extremely good game to bet on. Nearly no other sport has as many stats available as baseball, and MLB Betting experts can take advantage of things like wind stats, pitcher handedness, and stadium. Furthermore, the baseball season is 160 games so one of Ohio’s two teams should always be playing.
Cleveland Guardians
The Guardians have not win the World Series since the 1940s and even though they made a finals appearence in 2016, things aren’t likely to change anytime soon. They might have a shot at the AL Central though.
Cincinnati Reds
The things aren’t brighter for Ohio’s other baseball team. Cincinnatti Reds betting might be popular, but bettors backing the Reds have a high chance of losing their money. For a game that hasn’t one a playoff game in more than 10 years, Cincinnati still has a loyal fan base following their games.
NHL Betting
Hockey is a popular sport in the Midwest and NHL Betting in Ohio reflects that. Instead of point spreads favored in other sports, ice hockey is often wagered on the moneyline. Teams also often play back-to-back games, which can be advantageous to sharp bettors.
Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets not exactly newcomers to the National Hockey League with their 20+ season appearances, but they’ve been perpetually stuck to the middle of the table. Even though they regularly make the playoffs, there has not been much to celebrate once they get there. Still, it’s nice to bet on the home team in the Buckeye State as well.
MLS Betting
While not nearly as popular in America as other sports, soccer is the most popular sport in the world. It’s also the most bet on sport in the world. With two soccer teams in the state, Ohio will surely see it’s share of soccer betting. Even though the state misses the 2022 World Cup, there are soccer competitions to bet all around the year.
Columbus Crew
The 2008 MLS Cup winners are not exactly top of the heap in the US soccer world, even though they still regularly make the playoffs. The Crew is a solid team, but they lack the star potential in a league where teams from the big states keep buying up soccer stars from Europe.
FC Cincinnati
Cincinnati is one of the worst teams in MLS. Without Recently, they’ve managed to get back some of their form and are no longer bottom of the pack, but their chances of lifting the MLS cup in the next few years are slim at best.
College Sports Betting
The Ohio Sate Buckeyes are huge. In fact they are Ohio sports fans favorite team. And it’s not just Big Ten football and basketball, people in the sports crazy state focus on sports like wrestling as well. In addition to Ohio State, there are schools such as Akron and Toledo, which have great sports tradition. Look out for March Madness and Big 10 football come college sports betting time!
β Bet Types
Because Ohio will most likely be home to most of the big sports betting operators, we can expect that the usual sports bets (bet types) are available in the state. You can also bet on in-state or Ohio college sports teams apart from professional sports, combat sports, golf, tennis, soccer, etc. At any mobile sports betting site, you will find the usual sports wagering options.
- Moneyline bets
- Spread bets
- Over/Unders
- Prop Bets
- Parlays
- In-play Betting (live betting)

All the deposit methods are instantaneous, but there are some key differences between them. Credit card is the simplest method for depositing.
