Freedom Plaza in New York City is said to be opening a PGRC (Problem Gambling Resource Center), based on PlaySmart centers in Ontario and Niagara casinos; alongside their recent application for a New York City casino license.
PlaySmart centers are dedicated areas within every OLG (Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation) casino and charitable gaming venues across the entire Canadian province of Ontario.
They are run by the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) in partnership with the OLG.
The centers are designed to be both welcoming and engaging, offering gamblers a spot to learn, reflect or take a break in the most supportive manner possible.
Gamblers can discover how the casino games work including an understanding of odds, mechanics and various betting strategies through interactive kiosks, videos, brochures and quizzes.
Professional staff are available to answer questions, clarify any misconceptions and have conversations about play habits. They can connect players with the necessary help or referrals that they may need, alongside other forms of guidance.
Players can get confidential referrals to local addiction or gambling support services, despite the centers not providing ongoing counseling themselves.
They are a province-wide initiative to promote informed and healthy gambling through education, engagement and support.
Mohegan and the Soloviev Group revealed they are signing an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the NYCPG (New York Council on Problem Gambling to establish the PGRC in the six-acre space from 38th to 41st street on the east side.
The private space aims to both “self-serve” and “full-serve”, dependent on the help that gamblers need, as professionals are able to provide educational support through resources available.
Some centers include phone charging stations, televisions, coffee and other amenities to make them feel both accessible and inclusive.
The PlaySmart program is the cornerstone of the OLG’s award-winning responsible gambling initiative, having received global recognition and certificates from the likes of the World Lottery Association and RG Check.
Ray Pineault, CEO at Mohegan, stated: “At Mohegan, we believe that creating a world-class gaming experience must go hand in hand with a deep commitment to responsible play.
“Partnering with the NYCPG to establish an onsite resource center at Freedom Plaza reflects our ongoing dedication to supporting guests and team members who may be struggling and ensuring they have access to the tools and support they need.
“This initiative is a critical step in fostering a safe, informed and community-minded gaming environment for all.”
Michael Hershman, CEO of Soloviev Group, claimed: “This partnership reflects our commitment to building a venue that prioritizes the health and well-being of our guests. By working together with the NYCPG, we’re establishing a gold standard for responsible gaming in New York.”
NYCPG’s executive director, Michelle Hadden, added: “The NYCPG is proud to collaborate with the Soloviev Group in this forward-thinking initiative. Together, we’re creating a safe and supportive space within the gaming environment that emphasizes prevention, awareness and recovery.”
These centers align with OLG’s pledge to keep gambling fun, informative and within healthy boundaries through clear communication, useful tools and a supportive presence. Play smart but stay in control.
