New York Sports Betting

Nine different online sportsbooks were approved for a NY online sports betting license on Nov 8, 2021.

New York sports betting took off in 2019 with in-person sports wagering. Now, four sportsbooks have launched online as well, after the New York state legislature approved online betting regulations and the New York State Gaming Commission gave green light to nine mobile sports betting operators for the New York market. With nearly all the top sportsbooks given a license, New York sports bettors get the top of the line experience for online sports betting.

DraftKings Sportsbook

The DraftKings sportsbook app is probably the best in the market with numerous leagues, bet types and betting guides. Their bonus is not the best of the bunch with 25x wagering, but you should definitely test out DraftKings New York when you get the chance.

FanDuel

FanDuel Sportsbook app is a great option for many New York residents, as it has all the functions you could want. FanDuel NY has all the major sports, odds boosts, and a standard bonus for new users.

Caesars NY

Caesars sports betting app, previously operated as William Hill, is one of BonusFinder US favorites. Out of all the New York sportsbooks, Caesars Entertainment probably has the best-known loyalty program in Caesars Rewards, plenty of popular sports to bet online on, and the Caesars app is easy to navigate.

BetRivers

BetRivers NY sports betting site is not among the best-known NY betting sites, but they have a good chance of becoming a popular mobile app. They have an iOS NY sportsbook app, which is lacking in some of the other states where they operate, and it’s easy to place wagers online. All sportsbook operators strive to provide the most competitive odds, but BetRivers has many other qualities that will attract new users.

BetMGM

BetMGM launched a week after the first four online books, and New Yorkers are sure to love it. BetMGM offers plenty of betting markets, great promos, a decent welcome offer, and their loyalty program is one of the best in the country.

⭐ Legalization of Online Betting in New York

After the US Supreme Court struck down the federal law PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) and ended the federal ban on betting in 2018, New York legislature decided to pursue legal sports betting. By 2019, land-based NY casinos could start accepting legal wagers. However, the legislation did not include additions to New York Online Gambling. On January 6th 2021, Gov. Andrew Cuomo suddenly announced that he would be willing to agree to a mobile sports betting model where NY State Lottery would run the mobile wagering.

However, in April 2021, Gov. Cuomo legalized NY sports betting with mobile licenses available for two or more operators. During the Summer, New York received six competiting bids for the online sports betting licenses. In November, the New York State Gaming Commission chose two groups with a total of nine sportsbooks to launch prior to the Super Bowl 2022.

Regulations

While Sen. Joseph Addabbo Jr, a major advocate of NY online sports betting, supported a more competitive market, former Gov. Cuomo pushed to maximize the online sports betting revenue to the state’s coffers. This led to regulations that are not ideal for the operators, and potentially not for the sports bettors either. Governed by the New York State Gaming Commission, all operators must conform to the following:

  1. The mobile sports betting licensing fee is $25 million for 10 years.
  2. In addition, each operator must pay $5 million annually to one of four commercial casinos to host their servers, in order to consider the wagers being made on-site.
  3. Operators must pay 51% tax rate on gross revenue.
  4. Minimum age for NY online sports betting is 21 years of age.

With the high costs of operating in NY sports betting, bettors in New York might see worse lines than in neighboring other states with mobile betting. In addition, promotions might be small or nonexistent. However, being one of the largest legal sports betting markets in the U.S. might offset some of the difficulties, as the annual revenue could be up to $1B according to state estimates.

⭐ Sportsbook Bonuses & Promos

Caesars Bonus NY

The best online sports betting welcome bonus offers attract new customers to the online sportsbooks.

New Yorkers will have plenty of welcome bonuses and promotions to choose from when signing up for online sportsbooks. Below are some of the common options:

  • Risk-Free Bets: The most common out of all sportsbook offers: if your first wager loses, the sportsbook refunds you in site credit, worth the amount of your loss up to a certain point. Usually, you can cash out your winnings (but not the stake) after wagering the site credit once.
  • Wager Match: A quite rare offer, but some sites offer new customers a free bet worth the amount of their first bet, regardless whether it wins of loses.
  • Deposit Matches: This one is simple: the sportsbook gives you money in accordance to your first deposit. For instance, if your sportsbook is offering 50% up to $200, a $100 deposit would get you $50 in bonus cash. In many cases, you get 100% match, but in some less than that. You often have to wager through the bonus money more than for risk free wagers.
  • Free Bets: Just like it sounds, the sportsbook gives you a free bet or site credits. These are often given as a part of various promotions if your other bets win or exceed a certain dollar amount. Note that you can’t keep the stake, only the winnings.
  • Bet Insurance: If you opt in to insure your bet, you can get money back if there’s a last minute comeback or one of your parlay legs loses.
  • Refer-A-Friend: Most sportsbooks give you site credit if your friend signs up and deposits on the sportsbook.
  • Early Cashout: On some sites, you can opt in for an early cashout, which means you can settle your bet early in case you get the feeling the end result won’t be in your favor.

⭐ NY Sportsbook Apps

All of the brands approved for mobile sports wagering in NY have great online sports betting apps, and there’s no doubt all of them will be available in New York too. Virtually all sportsbook apps can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store (iOS apps) and the Google Play Store, so New York bettors should have no problems getting them. Note that mobile sports betting apps use geolocation technology to prevent out-of-state sports betting, so you should always connect to Wi-Fi when wagering to ensure your phone appears to be physically located in New York.

⭐ Differences Among the Sportsbooks

While all nine operators in the Empire State will offer the same service, online sports betting, there is variance in the operations. You can sign up for several sportsbooks, and you should look up each one’s offerings before making a deposit. Below are some of the things you should check out when choosing a sportsbook:

  • Bonus
When each of the mobile sportsbooks launches, you should take a look at the welcome bonus; you should always pick a sign up bonus that suits you. In our opinion, Caesars Sportsbook NY has the best bonus for new users.
  • App
Some New York sports betting apps are a bit more convoluted with information or just don’t look very good.
  • Markets
DraftKings and BetMGM have the biggest variety in betting markets, but some of the other books support smaller sports too. If you’re interested in niche sports, check out each site’s markets.
  • Bet Types
Same game parlays have become all the rage recently, as well as live betting. All legal sports betting apps offer the same basic mobile wagers, but there’s variance when it comes to parlays and prop bets.
  • Availability
If you like to travel a lot, you might want to sign up at a sportsbook that is live in multiple states, like FanDuel Sportsbook. That way you can bet on the Knicks while on the road!
  • Banking Options
There is also variance among the sportsbooks in deposit and withdrawal methods, but some of the common ones are online wallets like PayPal, Play+, credit & debit cards, bank transfers and ACH.

⭐ Sports Markets

From the Knicks to the Jets, New Yorkers have plenty of professional sporting teams to root and bet for. Furthermore, legendary venues like the Madison Square Garden host events across various sports leagues. Yankees Betting

Yankees are one of the biggest New York sports teams.

MLB

The rivalry between the Yankees and the Mets is what sports in New York are all about. It culminated in the World Series in 2000, but the rivalry is still going strong. Both teams have a great roster, and MLB games are a delight for New York bettors and baseball fans alike.

NFL

New York is the home to both the Giants and the Jets NFL teams. The Giants lead the rivalry in Super Bowls, and in pretty much everything else as well, although neither team has been shining during the NFL regular season in recent years. Instead, New York sports fans might be able to place bets on the Bills to win the Super Bowl in 2022.

NHL

The New York Rangers and the New York Islanders are responsible for the most heated hockey rivalry in the Big Apple, although they are not the favorite teams from the Eastern Conference to win the Stanley Cup. Meanwhile, the Buffalo Sabres have been dragging through the mud as the least successful team in the NHL.

NBA

NBA has a strong representation in the Big Apple, but the current roster of the Knicks doesn’t have much cause for celebration. Still, there’s always the special feeling when you place the home team on your bet slip and sit back to watch the game. On other hand, the Nets are among the favorites to win the NBA championship at the NBA finals.

New York also has a WNBA team in New York Liberty, but their stats mirror that of the mens’ teams.

MLS

The New York City FC is the most recent MLS Cup winner, but the New York Red Bulls is an average team at best. However, soccer is gaining more and more popularity in New York State, so there are a lot of betting opportunities for both teams. They also have a NWSL Soccer team, Gotham FC.

UFC / MMA

UFC and MMA were not sanctioned by the New York State Athletic Commission for a long time. However, when UFC finally arrived, it arrived with a bang. At UFC 205, dubbed by Dana White as the biggest fight card in history, Conor McGregor struck gold to become the first reigning double division UFC champion. Since then, New York has played host to some of the biggest fight cards in the promotions history, including Diaz vs Masvidal and St-Pierre vs Bisping.

Boxing

Unlike the UFC, boxing has never had a bad rep in New York City. Several legends like Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson have boxed under the lights of Madison Square Garden. Nowadays, it’s perhaps best known for Andy Ruiz Jr’s sensational knockout of Anthony Joshua back in 2019.

Other Sports

New York also plays host to the fourth and final Grand Slam in the Tennis ATP series, the US Open. For golf bettors, the US Open took place in New York in 2020, although we might have to wait a bit for the next edition. You can also bet on college sports, just not on in-state college teams. It is safe to say that legal betting options are plentiful in the Empire State, regardless of sport.

⭐ Types of Bets

If you are new to sports betting in NY, you might not be familiar with the bet types. Below, we walk new bettors through the most common ones with some examples of betting odds.

Moneyline

Moneyline bets are probably the most simple to understand; you bet on the winner of the game. Virtually all sports leagues have moneylines, and they always have a favorite and an underdog. Betting on the underdog gets you a bigger potential payout, but the favorite is more likely to win. In the example below, Bills are the favorites by a longshot.

Teams BetMGM NY BetRivers Sports book DraftKings NY
Bills -750 -670 -590
Jets +550 +510 +425

Point Spreads

Point spread bets are a bit more complicated; you bet on the team and the point amount you expect them to win by. So if you bet on the Bills “to cover the spread”, you believe they’ll win by 12 points or more. On other hand, the Jets just need to stay within 11 points or win the game for that spread bet to win.

Teams Spread Odds
Bills -11.5 -110
Jets +11.5 -110

Totals

This particular wager means betting on the total number of points or goals in a game, but in the form of over or under a certain number. Often, it is a decimal number, for example 5.5 goals in the Islanders versus New Jersey Devils game. In this case, a 3-2 result would be an under bet, while 2-4 would be over.

NYI vs NJD BetMGM BetRivers DraftKings
Over 5.5 +100 +104 +105
Under 5.5 -120 -122 -125

Parlays

Parlays means combining several bets into one. A common one is to choose several moneyline bets; for example, you can pick Rangers, Florida Panthers, and Boston Bruins to all win during the same round. Some sportsbooks let you build a single-game parlay, which means choosing the legs from one game.

betmgm same game parlay

BetMGM Sportsbook offers a Single Game Parlay for various games.

Prop Bets

Prop bets are bets on individual players or teams that don’t directly affect the result of the game. Some books offer a more broad range of props than others, and some sports have more options than others.

  • Player X to score the first touchdown
  • Player Y to throw 300 yards
  • First team to 20 points
  • Time of 1st goal
  • Leader after 1st half
  • Both teams to score in the 1st half

Live In-Game Betting

Many sportsbooks, if not all, offer live betting. This means you can get in a sports bet from your mobile device when the sporting events are in action. Live bets vary by online books, but in general you can bet on sports live for any major league.

Futures

Finally, futures bets are wagers on upcoming events. The classic futures are Super Bowl Winner, World Series Winner or MVP awards. Each team in a league has odds to win, but since there can only be one, the potential payouts for the unlikely candidates are very high.
