⭐ When Will Kansas Launch Online Sports Betting?

Kansas sports betting

Legal sports betting is coming to Kansas in 2022.

The Kansas sports betting bill was signed by Gov. Laura Kelly in May 2022, and sports betting became legal on July 1st, 2022. However, Kansas sports betting rules and regulations are still being drafted. The Kansas Lottery and the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission oversee sports betting, sports gambling advertisements, and daily fantasy sports contests. They are hoping to launch before the start of the 2022 NFL season.

Kansas Sports Betting Update

From start to finish, Kansas online sports betting was passed in a rush to beat next-door neighbor Missouri. Even though the initial steps were taken way back in 2021, once the bill was introduced in the House, it took less than two months to be signed.

  • July 1, 2022 — Sports betting is now officially legal in Kansas.
  • June 20, 2022 — Gov. Kelly is confident first books will go live in Kansas prior to the potential launch date of January 1, 2023.
  • May 19, 2022 — The KRGC is required to publish betting licensing rules in August 2022, after which more details about exact launch date can be expected.
  • May 16, 2022 — DraftKings and BallyBet reach a sports wagering partnership agreement with Boot Hill Casino & Resort.
  • May 14, 2022 — Boyd Gaming sues the state over historic horse racing machines agreement, which is now unclear due to the sports betting news.
  • May 12, 2022 — Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly signs sports betting legislation, legalizing sports betting in Kansas.
  • April 29, 2022 — Kansas Senate votes 21-13 in favor of SB84. The bill will legalize retail and online sports betting.
  • April 1, 2022 — A conference committee comes to an agreement on SB 84 and the House approves the bill.
  • March 30, 2022 — The Kansas House committee introduces Senate Bill 84.
  • March 24, 2022 — Kansas representatives discuss a new sports betting bill SB 84, which is similar to House Bill 2740.

⭐ The Kansas Sports Betting Legislation

The KS sports betting law seems very tempting for sportsbooks. Sportsbook operators need to partner up with one of the four Kansas Lottery owned commercial casinos in the state, or with entertainment venues (the bill specifically mentions Children’s Mercy Park and the Kansas Speedway). However, with a tax rate of just 10%, Kansas will be one of the best places for sportsbooks who may be able to offer better betting lines in Kansas.

Details

Here are the exact details for the retail and mobile sports betting bill:

  • Every casino can have up to three online skins and up to 50 retail sports betting partnerships with the state lottery retailers.
  • A casino can request an extra online skin in partnership with a major sports team (Sporting Kansas City of the MLS or a future other Kansas pro team).
  • Sports betting will be taxed at 10%.
  • Betting on pro, college and motorsports, or a significant sporting event authorized by the Gaming Commission is allowed (special events can include e-sports wagering).

Kansas sports betting apps are expected to launch in the near future.

What Will the Bill Mean for Kansas?

The neighboring states Missouri and Oklahoma failed to pass sports betting legislation in 2022, which makes Kansas one of the few states with legal sports betting in the area. This means that even with the relatively low 10% tax, Kansas will gather a lot of tax revenue. Most likely offshore sports betting sites’ revenues will be reduced, as regulated online betting will have a foothold in the area.

The initial plan for sports betting revenue is to bring another pro sports team to the state. 80% of the revenue will be going towards an “Attracting Professional Sports to Kansas Fund”, which is rumored to be solely focused on attracting the Kansas City Chiefs over the border.

⭐ Kansas Sportsbooks

Kansas will have at least 12 sports betting licenses up for grabs. Each of the four state-owned casinos in Kansas can have up to three online sports betting partners. Additional sports betting licenses may be awarded if the Kansas casinos partner with professional teams and entertainment venues. We don’t know what brands are going to enter Kansas yet, but we can speculate already.

When sports betting becomes legal in Kansas, DraftKings will have a partnership with Boot Hill Casino. There will also be a DraftKings retail sportsbook in Dodge City. DK has excellent alternate lines for point spreads and sweet odds boosts.

2. FanDuel Sportsbook

FanDuel is another sports betting site that will be legal in Kansas as they have a partnership with Boyd Gaming, which owns the Kansas Star Casino. FanDuel has been a DFS provider since 2015 and like DraftKings, they always take advantage of sports betting legalization in a new state. Even though DK is the biggest brand name, FanDuel is the most successful online betting site in America and they expect the Kansas sports betting market will maintain the status quo.

3. BetMGM

BetMGM styles itself as the King of Sportsbooks and is the sportsbook company of MGM Resorts International. In many of the states where they operate, they are one of the players’ favorite mobile apps that offer sports betting. They have good live odds on most sporting events and have excellent promotions. Kansas sports bettors can be assured that BetMGM Sportsbook will be taking sports bets in Kansas as well. BetMGM Kansas bonus code will be BONUSMGM, so note that down for the future!

Caesars has the best loyalty program among expected sportsbooks in Kansas. Many Kansas residents are already familiar with the brand, as the closest Caesars’ retail property is located just across the border in Kansas City, MO. Kansas Betting Apps

Kansas will have a vibrant online wagering industry, as the top sportsbooks are expected to launch in Kansas.

5. Barstool Sportsbook

Penn National Gaming, who owns Barstool, also owns Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway. They will certainly use that venue to get a sports betting license before the Kansas market launches. Which additional brands Penn National partners with remains to be seen.

6. PointsBet

PointsBet Sportsbook is an Australian company which has gained some popularity in the US. Their online sportsbooks have an interesting spread betting system called PointsBetting, which rewards players depending on how correctly they can pick out the prop bets or the spread. They also have great odds for player props. PointsBet’s promo code for the welcome offer will be BONUS2000.

7. Bally Bet

BallyBet announced a market access deal with Boot Hill Casino in May 2022, so we know that Kansas regulators will be receiving their application. The BallyBet Sportsbook is not a big operation yet, but they will expand to several US states by the end of 2022. They have a great sportsbook app with a user-friendly interface and excellent moneyline odds.

8. Hard Rock Sportsbook

Hard Rock isn’t the best known sportsbook around, but they have a partnership with Peninsula Pacific Entertainment, who operates the Kansas Crossing Casino. Therefore, they would find it easy to compete for a Kansas sports betting license.

Baseball is America's favorite past time and now bettors have grown to love it too. During the MLB season, you can wager on games almost every day. Many baseball bettors spend a lot of time analyzing the bull pen or best hitters but you can get started with simpler bets like moneylines or totals.

Division I football and basketball gather people together, especially in states where pro sports are nonexistent. There are three Division I college programs in Kansas: the Kansas State Wildcats (football, basketball, baseball), the Kansas Jayhawks (football, basketball, baseball), and the Wichita State Shockers (basketball and baseball). Fortunately, the Kansas legislation allows betting on college teams, including in-state college games.

Sporting KC might not be as popular as the baseball and football teams, but there is still strong support for soccer in the state.
